This is a cause for panic for most people new to home heating oil. But it’s not the end of the world. You have two main options; you can order a same-day delivery or you can go to your local petrol station and see if they can supply you with a barrel of kerosene. However, getting your home heating oil at a petrol station is much more expensive than ordering from an oil company but may be the best alternative in case of emergency.

Right so you’ve ordered your home heating oil. What now? Well if you tried to turn your heating on before you discovered you had no home heating oil left then you will probably have to get your boiler bled. This is due to air getting into your pipes which prevents the hot air being circulated throughout your house. Generally, your heating oil supplier can do this for you at the time of delivery, this will save you money as opposed to getting a plumber out to do it. It’s easy to tell that your boiler needs bled. It just won’t work, there will be absolutely no heat coming off your radiator. The best way to describe it is that it’s a bit like when you run out of petrol/diesel in your car, the car won’t operate at a maximum speed of 20mph, it will simply not work at all.

It is also recommended that you don’t let your tank get below ¼ full. This is in order to prevent a build-up of sludge getting pulled out of the bottom of your heating oil tank which will have naturally formed over time.
